How do I apply to the AGPT program?

Applications are open between April and May each year, to commence training the following year. It is a national selection process with applications made directly to the Department of Health.

The application form is completed online on the AGPT website.

What preparation should I do before applying to the program?

The AGPT Applicant Guide available on the AGPT website is a good place to start. The applicant guide provides information on the application, selection and assessment process. You could also visit the GP College (ACRRM and RACGP) websites for more information.

Am I guaranteed a place on the training program?

No. There are limited places on the AGPT program. Positions are offered in line with our selection policy following shortlisting through the national application process.

I haven’t completed the mandatory hospital experience, can I still apply?

Yes, as long as you meet the eligibility criteria you are able to apply. You will be able to complete the required mandatory hospital experience during the first year of the program. Please note that you will not be able to commence your General Practice Term until you have completed the mandatory hospital experience. If unsure about your hospital experience and whether or not you meet the requirements please contact us.

.

Can the rotations I did as an intern count as my mandatory hospital experience?

Yes, hospital experience gained prior to receiving your general registration can be counted.

How much does General Practice training cost?

The AGPT program does not require co-payments from registrars. Registrars are required to pay for the College Fellowship exams. Registrars also need to be members of the relevant College so will need to pay an annual membership fee.

Which fellowship should I choose?

Both fellowships enable you to work as a vocationally registered GP anywhere in Australia. Fellowship choice is made prior to joining the program and you then join the relevant College on starting in the AGPT. You can train towards either or both fellowships on either pathway. Whichever pathway or fellowship you choose, you will be required to abide by the pathway and college requirements, see RACGP Fellowship and ACRRM Fellowship.

Can I defer once I am accepted into the program?

No, it is not possible to defer your place on the AGPT program, or to start on leave with the exception of Category 1 and Category 3 Leave. Read the relevant AGPT Leave from Program Policy for full details.

Who employs me during training?

Registrars completing their hospital training will be employed by a hospital. Registrars are expected to secure their own hospital employment.

Registrars undertaking their General Practice time will be directly employed by an accredited training post. During your time on the AGPT program your employment is your own responsibility, however EV facilitate the placement process.
