Following a number of Information sessions on the ‘Pathways into Medicine’ including simulation activities offered to secondary school students across Gippsland earlier in the year, a UMAT (Undergraduate Medical Admissions Test) was provided to Year 12 Gippsland students who had registered to sit this three hour exam.  The five hour session was held on 15 July at Monash Rural Health, Latrobe Regional Hospital and facilitated by Year 4 Monash University Medical students, Michael Zhang and Rachel van Zetten.  The session was well attended and the feedback has since been positive with a number of students receiving excellent results for the exam.  What a fantastic effort by our ‘future’ medical workforce!  The support we receive from Monash University in Gippsland and their medical students enable the GSMN to continue offering opportunities to Gippsland secondary students that they may not otherwise have access to.

IGPPP – Intern General Practice Placement Program

We are delighted to announce that EV has been successful in obtaining funding via the Rural Junior Doctors Innovation Training Fund.

The Intern General Practice Placements Program (IGPPP) consists of 10 rotations offered to interns within the Gippsland Rural Intern Training Program (GRIT) which is managed by Latrobe Regional Hospital. The rotations will be co-ordinated by EV in collaboration with LRH and undertaken at Heyfield Medical Centre and Maffra Medical Group. We look forward to working with both staff and interns involved in this program.

GPO / GPA Advanced Trainee Workshop

A combined two day workshop was held on 1 & 2 July 2017 in Ballarat. The workshop convened by Dr Mick Shaw and Dr David Simon and was well attended by all trainees and supported by Dr Louise Sterling, Dr Andrea Noar, Dr Steve Grigoleit and Dr Andrew Haughton. Feedback received from the trainees demonstrated that it was extremely well received and reinforced the importance of these workshops from an educational, network and collaboration perspective. We acknowledge the state government funding provided via RWAV to make these workshops possible.

The next combined GPO and GPA Advanced Trainee workshop will be held November in Wangaratta.

Skills Training – Gippsland

We are delighted to announce that Dr Kelly Seach will be joining the team in Gippsland to provide medical educational support for the Skills Training area. Kelly will be involved in all aspects to support the Skills Training area which focuses on the Advanced Procedural posts and extended skills posts plus the GRIT Interns undertaking general practice rotations at Heyfield and Maffra.
