GPA & GPO Workshop – October 2018
A two day combined GPO & GPA workshop for Advanced Trainees was held in Wangaratta and convened by Dr Andrew Haughton and supported by Drs Antony Wong, Bill Fraser, Greg Coates, Judith Krones, Louise Sterling, Patrick Stark, Philippa Murray and Kylie Waller. We would like to acknowledge the support and fantastic assistance provided by the University Melbourne Staff, Jan Garvey and Trent Hyde and the midwives from the Wangaratta Hospital and PROMPT nurse from Mansfield Hospital.
Day 1 consisted of a full day of combined simulation scenarios which included specialists and nursing staff in a multidisciplinary team environment. On Day 2 of the program separate sessions were held for each group.
The comprehensive educational program over the two days provided an opportunity for trainees to upskill as well as participate in combined education. A total of 14 trainees attended both days (9 GPAs and 5 GPOs).
The feedback once again proved how beneficial these Workshops are for trainee GPAs and GPOs. The opportunity to ‘practice’ skills in a non-threatening environment is essential to the development of both their skills and knowledge as well as the opportunity to gain a better understanding of where their skills are compared to the other trainees. Trainees were able to gain confidence and a sense of moving towards working independently.
The dinner and separate sessions on day two were well received and completed a great educational weekend as well as the opportunity for collegiately amongst their peers and colleagues.
GPA State-wide Workshop Program – Pre Exam Workshop – November 2018
A Pre-Exam Workshop was held on 25 November 2018 in Melbourne for the GPA registrars due to sit the JCCA exam in December. The workshop kicked off with a dinner allowing examiners and registrars to come together further promoting the collegiately already established amongst registrars and networking opportunities with members of ANZCA including the President, Dr Rod Mitchell.
The workshop was facilitated by Dr Mick Shaw and provided registrars the opportunity to undertake practice VIVAs. There were six examiners including two FANZCAs, Dr Rod Mitchell and Dr Sean McManus (Queensland Regional Committee Chair ANZCA) plus Dr Greg Coates, Dr Fred Rosewarne and Dr Ryan Mullans for the six stations. All GPA registrars from across the State attended the workshop and the feedback received strongly indicated the benefits for registrars being able to practice exam techniques and receive constructive feedback.
We would like to acknowledge the effort Dr Shaw provided in leading the workshop and the support of the examiners and their input into the scenarios provided.
Additional Funding Received…
EV were approved for funding to continue delivering the GPO and GPA State-wide workshop program until June 2019. We are pleased to announce that additional funding was also successfully sought to further enhance and extend the workshop program in the first half of 2019. The additional funding will provide the opportunity to extend the program and to invite additional speakers/facilitators (some of whom may be interstate), spread each program over three days allowing more time for those travelling longer distances and further enhancing the networking and collegiately aspects to the program.
We look forward to delivering these 2 x 3 day combined Workshops in Gippsland and Ballarat to further enhance the opportunity for skill enhancement of all state-wide GPO and GPA registrars.
