Eastern Victoria GP Training is proud to acknowledge and be part of National Reconciliation Week.
Each year National Reconciliation Week is held from 27 May to 3 June.
These two dates are significant milestones in Australia’s reconciliation journey.
- 27 May 1967 – more than 90% of Australians voted ‘yes’ in a referendum to give the Australian Government the power to make laws for Aboriginal peoples and to include Aboriginal peoples in the Census.
- 3 June 1992 – the High Court recognised native title in the landmark Mabo v Queensland case, busting the myth of terra nullius.
This year’s theme is ‘In this together‘, designed to remind us that we all have a role to play when it comes to reconciliation in Australia and to continue to individually and collectively build relationships and knowledge that value Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, histories and cultures.
Reconciliation Australia notes that this year’s theme is resonating in ways not foreseen when the theme was announced in 2019, but now serves to remind us whether in the midst of a health emergency or in reconciliation we are In this together.
