The Closing the Gap government strategy aims to reduce disadvantage among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, as identified by the Council of Australian Governments in 2008.
The six targets set at that time in the areas of health, education and employment, were proving difficult to attain – for various reasons such as absence of baseline data and ambitious time frames. Four targets expired in 2018.
In December 2016, COAG committed to working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples to refresh the agenda, promising a strengths based approach and that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples would be at the heart of the development and implementation of the next phase of Closing the Gap.
A new agreement between the Coalition of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peak Organisations and the Australian Government was launched in July 2020. New targets have been established. See the targets here or access the full report.
