QA and Research Update (March 2018)

By March 16, 2018March 20th, 2018No Comments

The portfolios of QA and research are in the process of being reorganised. Belinda Garth will be taking the lead in Quality Assurance assisted by Jo Rash. Cat Kirby will be taking the lead in research with the assistance of Jenny Lamb. Both portfolios remained strongly linked as our priority is quality educational practice that is informed and supported by current best evidence and by research.

Our areas of focus for the next six months are in-practice feedback, end of training interviews and supervisor CPD needs. In-practice feedback will be the focus of our supervisor residential workshops for 2018 and is the subject of a research proposal. The capacity to give and receive corrective feedback, to self-correct and resilience are all important training goals. End of training interviews are a valuable window into registrar’s whole of training experience that can be used for both the registrars’ and our program’s benefit. We are very fortunate at the generosity of registrars, supervisors and EV staff for their willingness to contribute to QA and research activities.

We have gained considerable insight from recent and current research projects that informs the educational work of EV. A scoping of models of training nationally and internationally highlights the central place of learning in the workplace and the need to orientate other modes of education to reinforce work-based learning. The relational component of learning and the importance of context have also been highlighted. A project examining the way supervisors balance clinical and educational demands has given insight into how we might structure support for supervisors, particularly in ensuring that their work is valued, that they have the opportunity for networking and benchmarking, and that there are the resources to ensure that teaching and supervision is allocated the time needed.

Expressions of interest for the 2019 round of registrar academic posts will open from 9 April – 20 May 2018. To find out more about these posts, contact Cat Kirby at Catherine.Kirby@evgptraining.com.au
