Intern GP Rotation (IGPPP) – Orientation Lunch
In January, an Orientation lunch was held at the Tinamba Hotel for the new cohort of interns from the Gippsland Rural Intern Training Program. These interns will undertake a GP rotation this year. The program was hosted by Dr Kelly Seach with Practice Managers and Supervisors attending from Breed St Clinic, Heyfield Medical Centre and Maffra Medical Group. All 15 interns attended and had the opportunity to listen to a number of speakers including Professor Marlene Drysdale who spoke about the history of Aboriginals in Gippsland and Aboriginal Health. Dr Damian Hannon, EV Registrar and Registrar Medical Educator spoke with his RLO and GPRA ‘Future GP Program’ hat on. Dr Stacey Smith who was in their shoes 12 months again spoke about her experience and why she has now joined the GP Rural pathway with EV. Thank you to all staff involved from EV and the practices, this was an invaluable opportunity for the interns – which was appreciated by all.
GPO & GPA Rural Generalist Trainee Statewide Workshop – Ballarat
The third combined Rural Generalist GPO & GPA State Trainee Workshop was held in Ballarat on the weekend as part of the 2019 Workshop program. Most trainees were able to attend and we had great faculty support particularly from our Gippsland colleagues, Dr Michael Baker, Dr Antony Wong and Dr Bill Fraser. The feedback received was excellent and demonstrated how important these Workshops have become for trainees undertaking the JCCA and DRANZCOG Adv. Although the workshop was held later than normally scheduled, the benefit of this was that Trainees after completing the exam and for some having a break, were able to gain a real sense of what they had retained in their training and what they needed to still focus on during their Consolidation year. It was an intensive weekend with a total of 8 simulation scenarios being completed on Saturday – including support from midwives, theatre nurses and a local Obstetrician. Dr Michael Baker gave a great talk about his Soloman Islands experience over dinner Saturday night which was just inspiring. We thank Dr Andrew Haughton, Wangaratta for managing the Simulation program; Dr Mick Shaw from Ballarat Health Services for organising the venue and support staff; Deakin Clinical School and all staff involved for their support and work making it such a great success.
GPO & GPA Rural Generalist Trainee Statewide Workshop – Warragul
The ‘Rural Generalist GPO & GPA Trainee Statewide Workshop’ was held in Warragul this weekend (28 Feb – 1 Mar) co-ordinated by EV and lead by Drs Antony Wong, Patrick Ruane, supported by Mick Shaw, Bill Fraser, Greg Coates, Warrick Pill and Michael Baker. Trainees were also provided the unique opportunity of participating in a ‘Breaking Bad News’ session facilitated by local Clinical Psychologist John Reeves and actress, Veronica Porcaro. We thank Monash Rural Health for the use of their new building. The Workshop received excellent feedback by Trainees and all were looking forward to the next combined Ballarat Workshop in May but unfortunately was cancelled due to COVID-19. We hope to host the scheduled Workshop in Wangaratta in late October but unfortunately, there is a degree of uncertainty with this proceeding.
Gippsland Training Hub ‘Virtual’ Careers Pathways in Gippsland Information session
EV participated in an information session for Gippsland junior doctors predominantly PGY1/2 on 6 May 2020. Dr Liz Wearne and Julieanne McLuckie represented EV with Liz providing an overview of GP Training and her experience of training, living and working in Gippsland. Liz also detailed the benefits she has gained from her journey so far.
We thank the Gippsland Training Hub for organising such a worthwhile event for Gippsland junior doctors.
EV successfully launched the #OpportunityGippsland marketing campaign in February. The campaign comprised a series of practice profiles showcasing GP Training in Eastern Victoria.
The promotional video has been seen by over 5000 viewers online. EV is extremely pleased to have been able to support the Gippsland community through this campaign. We believe this campaign was one of the factors that supported high applicant numbers for the 2021 AGPT program with EV.
