What work will the registrar be doing?
Posts in drug and alcohol medicine provide addiction treatment services including opioid pharmacotherapy, alcohol treatment, drug withdrawal and hospital-based care. Registrars can work in residential detox services, with hospital inpatients suffering drug or alcohol withdrawal and with clients of the service for assessment and ongoing management. They work with a multidisciplinary psychosocial team including addiction medicine specialists and registrars from other training programs.
Skills to be gained within the post:
Substance use disorders are part of a general practice’s core business and registrars will learn skills in assessing, managing and prescribing for patients for detox and management of drug and alcohol addiction. They will also learn how to manage chronic pain and pain medication addiction.
